Summary
If you procure or license technology from a third party, request and obtain documentation of the accessibility of their product. The most common accessibility documentation is an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR), also known as a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). HECVAT Lite also includes a series of accessibility questions.
Outcome
VPAT/ACR or other accessibility documentation received and reviewed; accessibility issues documented; engagement on remediation.
Key Actions
- Communicate with relevant stakeholders (e.g., purchasing agents, project managers)
- Request and obtain accessibility documentation from vendor
- Submit documentation with Security Review OR request accessibility consultation
- Document accessibility issues disclosed in documentation
- Include documented issues in remediation plan
Notes
- This should be done prior to purchase or acquisition. See “Purchasing and Procuring Accessible Technology” for more information.
- Some or all of these steps might also be appropriate when working with local design and development teams.
- Vendors and developers often overstate the accessibility of their product. Do not rely on accessibility documentation alone.
