Key Concepts

  • Topics, subtopics, sidebars, and other document sections should be introduced by headings.
  • Headings in a document should provide a nested, consistent outline.
  • Heading levels should not be skipped.
  • Headings should not be used solely for style or formatting.

Check Headings

For each web page or view:

  • Activate the Check Headings bookmarklet on the browser’s Bookmarks toolbar.
  • Review the Headings panel:
    • Do headings introduce topics and sections of the document?
    • Are headings nested without skipping levels?

Escalate for Remediation

  • No headings
  • Skipped headings
  • Empty headings
