Overview

All Electronic Information Technology (EIT) intended for use in official University business must conform to the revised standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, as described by the United States Access Board in Appendix A of “Text of the Standards and Guidelines - United States Access Board” (Section 508), or to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.0, Level AA, as described by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)  2.0 (WCAG 2.0).

Technologies not addressed in WCAG or Section 508 should be considered to be covered by Section 255, as described by the United States Access Board in Appendix B of “Text of the Standards and Guidelines - United States Access Board” (Section 255).

Any functionality not addressed in the applicable standards must conform to the Functional Performance Criteria as described by the United States Access Board in Appendix C of “Text of the Standards and Guidelines - United States Access Board”, section 302.

For information about specific technologies, view the relevant page in this section, or contact the University of Iowa IT Accessibility Group.

Functional Accessibility

Regardless of standards conformance, technology must be accessible and usable by qualified users, including users of assistive technology, who are required to use the technology in their professional activities. If functional accessibility is not possible due to an exception, the party responsible for the technology must nonetheless provide a substantially equivalent process that enables the user to successfully and effectively participate in the activity.
