For some projects, it may make sense to create and apply your own captions. Do-It-Yourself captioning requires patience, skill, and planning, but if you need to do the job in-house, consider this do-it-yourself workflow.
Note: at some point during this process, you will upload your video file to your media server. If you publish your video before providing captions, understand that some users may experience barriers to access.
DIY captioning is a multistep process. In general, you can use the following workflow:
- Publish your video to your media server (e.g., YouTube, Sharestream, Vimeo).
- NOTE: You can perform this task at any time, keeping in mind that your live video may be subject to legal and/or policy requirements for accessibility if published prior to the availability of captions.
- Obtain or create a transcript for your video. Learn more about transcription options here.
- Synchronize the transcript with your original media using a tool such as Camtasia, MovieCaptioner, or SubtitleEdit.
- Export your caption in the appropriate format.
- Publish your caption file to the media server, associating the caption file with your uploaded media
- The media is now closed captioned; embed or link your video in a webpage to share.
